Bio-succinic acid production, up to pilot scale, by fermentation of industrial candy waste with Actinobacillus succinogenes 130Z and its downstream purification process. An article on pilot-scale bioconversion of candy waste to biosuccinic  acid was recently published by Antonios Lithourgidis and colleagues in the Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering. The work showcases the utilization of candy waste as a cheap carbon-rich stream to cut costs of biosuccinic acid production. The results presented will pave the way for testing the bioprocess at an even larger scale.
